Health & Physical Education

The Health and Physical Education (HPE) Department aims to provide a foundation for developing active and informed members of society. Students need to be equipped with the ability to make informed choices regarding themselves and their social, cultural and physical environments in the pursuit of good health.

Students are offered the opportunity to enhance their physical development while ‘learning and doing’ and solving problems in a supportive environment. The HPE curriculum is organised into two content strands:

  • Personal, Social and Community Health (Theory)
  • Movement and Physical Activity (Practical)

In each year level, students are required to spend at least 50% of class time participating in physical activity. In Year 7 and 8, emphasis is placed on students participating and experiencing a range of different sports including Australian Rules Football, Oz Tag, Indigenous games, synchronised swimming, athletics, netball, soccer, swimming, sof-crosse, speedminton and fitness. This is a core subject across these year levels. In Year 9 and 10, Health and Physical Education is an elective subject. Students should choose these subjects if they enjoy learning in and about physical activity and are interested in studying in the area in the Senior School. The Senior School (Year 11 and 12) focuses on developing skills and understandings that allow them to contribute in an informed and critical way to varied physical activity contexts and roles.

HPE would interest students who are physically active, enjoy a range of sports or who would like to further their knowledge of the physical culture of Australia. It provides a foundation for students who wish to pursue further study in human movement related fields such as sport development, exercise science, management, marketing and sales, sport and physical activity, policy development, sport journalism, sport psychology, coaching, athlete conditioning and management, personal training, sponsorship and fundraising, and primary, middle and senior school teaching.

Please refer to the Curriculum Handbooks on the Senior School page for more information on Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 HPE subjects.
