Religious Education

Our centre is Christ...

The Religious Education Department at The Cathedral College has an important role in light of the values identified in our school motto “Come, live life in all its fullness.”

The College also draws on the rich traditions and values of Catherine McAuley and Edmund Rice to foster a welcoming faith community who come to celebrate life in all its fullness. The College seeks to develop in students strong Christian Values and characteristics of reflective self-directed, lifelong learners and responsible, resourceful ethical citizens.

Students in Year 7-10 study four strands of Religious Education:

  • Morality
  • Beliefs
  • Liturgy
  • Prayer

Year 11 and 12 students are able to study the Queensland Studies Authority subject, Study of Religion. Over four semesters, students will complete the topics:

  • Sacred Texts
  • Religion/State Relationships
  • Religion Values and Ethics
  • Ritual and Ultimate Questions.

Students who do not choose this option can enrol in either Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology or Religion and Ethics. In the Certificate III course, students will study four modules over the two years of their senior schooling. At the end of Year 12, a completed Certificate III will provide students with 8 QCE points and a nationally accredited qualification.

Religion and Ethics investigates the role of religion in society today and challenges students to develop their ability to work collaboratively in addition to their written and spoken communication skills. Topics studied over the two year course include:

  • The Australian Scene
  • Heroes and Role Models
  • Religions of the World
  • Good and Evil
  • Ethics and Morality
  • Peace and Conflict
  • Meaning and Purpose

Through daily prayer, regular Liturgies of the Word, the Thursday morning Pastoral Care Mass, the monthly Saturday evening TCC/Parish Mass, Personal Development Days, retreats and practical outreach to the needy in our community and in our world, the Religious Education program is embedded in the day-to-day life of this Catholic Christian Community.
